Isolated blastomeres from a 2 cells mouse embryos. All were stained with Mitotracker Red (mitochondrial function) and MitoFluor Green (mitochondrial mass). Note that blastomeres of embryos 1 and 2 have similar mitochondrial mass (1A and 2A) but the mitochondrial function of blasomeres from embryo 2 is at least 400% lower (2B) than that of Embryo 1 (1B). In fact, even after 4 times longer exposure (note increased background noise - 2B), the mitochondrial fluorescence is still about half of that of in 1B. (McGinnis and Dozortsev, unpublished)
